I”ll get right to the point. I’m going to show you an effective way to protect your Microsoft based computer from all the malware out there. I’ll list the steps and then discuss how to go about it.
- Do not use Internet Explorer to view anything on the Internet that you can possibly avoid.
- Do not use Outlook or any Microsoft email program.
- Remove any virus scanner or protection tools that came loaded on the computer when you bought it.
- Install Kaspersky Pure or similar version that monitors all internet traffic including email, web pages, chat or other communications.
- For an added bonus, install Carbonite and allow it to back up all your files, pictures, movies, data of any kind that you would like to repserve.
- Periodically check Kaspersky and Carbonite to ensure they are up-to-date and running.
That is all you have to modify. Enjoy your computer.
Any time you install a program, especially free programs, ensure that it does not install any other software… None…. None at all. They often come with malware of their own and your passively allowing it to install will defeat any protection you may have. Just pay attention to what you install and what that installer might want to add for “free!”.
I have seen problem after problem with my client’s computers and they are using the default virus scanner that came with the computer. It may even be way out of date. They don’t know to monitor it to be sure it is up-to-date. Even if it was, it may not really be protecting your computer from all vulnerabilities. I have yet to see a current Kaspersky fail to protect a computer unless the operator actually tells the computer to install something they should be avoiding.
What do you do if you don’t use Internet Explorer? Download Firefox or Chrome, one of which may already be on your computer. Use one of these. Internet Explorer is the target of most all virus writers and they know how to force their stuff on your computer using Internet Explorer. Virus writers rarely code for Firefox or Chrome because it is a much smaller target and has less or at least different vulnerabilities. Internet Explorer is the default browser on all new Microsoft based computers and people often don’t go out of the way to install something else. That makes it a big target for virus writers as does Outlook or other Microsoft email programs. Remove any desktop links to Internet Explorer. Keep yourself from accidentally using it.
You can un-install the default (factory installed) virus scanner easily. Go to Start->Control Panel and select either Programs or Software and un-install. You probably need to reboot to complete the removal of the software. Purchase a copy of Kaspersky Pure and install it. You will get an email with the activation key and you need to activate the software while installing. Kaspersky comes with a license for three computers. Be sure you get all the computers around you. If you are a company, you can get a corporate license to protect everything.
As a bonus, also get a copy of Carbonite. It will backup all your standard files. Let it do that. It may take a few days. Then, go back and ensure it is really backing up all the files you need backed up. You can easily select more files to back up.
